looking at the depressingly low sign-up numbers for our 2nd semester bbq, i decided to give my residents a house call to promote the 'event'. but beyond that, i haven't been really building relationships with my neighbours much since the start of this year, hence i thought this would be a great opportunity.
however, i only made it to the floor above my unit because i was stuck chatting with zhi wei, a very nice singaporean boy who lives directly above me. we started talking about random stuff, music, jobs, travelling, etc; then his housemate, soon wen, a malaysian boy who reminds me a lot of Lot's-O-Huggin' Bear from Toy Story 3 came home and joined in the chat too.

it finally felt like living in a student dorm, and it felt good to be able to knock on your neighbour's door to say hi, how's it going, and end up chatting for 45 minutes. maybe it's the final year mentality, but i've really been sentimental about things like that lately. and i hesitate less. go out, do it, it's your last year, etc. i wished i had more chance to just rock up one floor above, chill out in someone else's living room and exchange how-dos.
after peeling off the layers and coming down to the core of it, i actually do love my job. i love ushering in a new batch of students, recognizing lost faces like mine when i first arrived, dealing with spoilt brats occasionally and shutting them up (that's the greatest satisfaction), i like the odd courtroom dramas (tenants vs landlord cases), the infidelity that takes place under our noses (married man with mistress), the dodgy tenant (suspected columbian hooker) etc.
the only sad thing about this job is, as one of residents/coursemate Yumi (artistic japanese girl) said, it can be depressing watching people come and go as you remain stagnant in the same place....you send off and old batch and welcome a new batch as they come and go...come and go...
