ボックス！Box!

肥佬方 （FF) and I managed to watch the second last film of the Japanese Film Festival last night thanks to the organizers who gave us volunteers free movie tickets. One of the highlights of this movie is that it was filmed in Osaka, which is the sister city of Melbourne.

This was an entertaining movie indeed. Well, ten minutes into the film, FF whispered, '这电影是给teenager看的吧?' (This looks like it's made for teenagers). And he was half right. Two good friends, one's a nerd, one's a wild child who loves boxing. Eventually, Kabu the cheeky manages to convince Yuki to join their high school's Boxing club. A face-off with a very strong rival at a inter-high school match turns their lives and friendship around...

But if you're going, ah, i get the gist...well, you don't. Because to pass it off as a stereotypical film is really unfair. Firstly, there are no stereotypical good looking people in this movie (purely subjective. and i am doing a direct comparison to most Taiwanese-made mainstream dramas/movies). Secondly, there is no damsel in distress. Well, actually there is, but she's not actually distressed, and she's not  anorexic or stereotypically cute.  Also, there are no sickeningly sweet romance, no tiresome game of hide and seek, no 30 minutes of tear-shedding cameo when the damsel dies. (oops. nah, it's ok,i didnt give away a very important plot). Besides, coming back to the main characters and plot, the movie emphasizes humility, strength, dedication
and discipline. I like it, i like the soundtrack too. And stuff Taiwanese dramas and Huang Xiao Ming.

Ice Kacang Puppy Love

I was actually quite impressed with Ah Niu's directorial debut. Cliched storyline aside, the filmatography was impressive. The director's play with vibrant scenes and backdrops was notable, and it managed to bring the tropic's countryside to life, which is usually featured in drab in other films. I think the actors, apart from
already established Malaysian actress Sinje Lee, did a thumbs up performance that allows them to be distinguished as actors from their singer/songwriter persona. If this was meant to be a 'revival' for Malaysia's Chinese Film Industry (though i'd argue that it is a revival for Malaysian Film Industry, period, especially after the passing of Yasmin Ahmad), Ah Niu certainly nailed it. If this is where MFI is heading to, i'll put my two cents on it and rejoice and await for the bigger and better to come. Now, who says Malaysia Tak Boleh?

Taipei Exchanges...i slept 10 minutes into it, but it's just me after a day of working i reckon

Deprtures. Watched this with the bf last night. Enough has been said about this film. I am probably the latest to watch it.
