i now truly understand why journalists have to earn (!!) their rounds.

footnote: a Round (also known as a 'Beat' in the US) is a specialised area of reporting. Examples of Rounds are: politics, health, education, police, business, transport, sports, lifestyle, fashion, entertainment- music, films, technology, etc.

it takes a lot of legwork and in-depth knowledge of your particular round, because not only would you need your contacts (sources) so badly, like manna from heaven, you'd need to actually speak their lingo to be a good rounds reporter.

i walked in the shoes of a fashion rounds reporter today to cover the RMIT Dangerous Goods Runway/Exhibition that is taking place in line with Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW) 2010. having no prior contacts in this field, i had to really get down to the basics, ie jumping up and down outside their studio that has only high windows, tapping on the windows to attract attention, knocking on doors, finding out who i can speak to, etc. and getting through the front door is only the beginning, striking a solid conversation is another. journalism, to me, after peeling off the layers, is a form of relationship. it's about being (or appearing to be) genuinely interested in someone's life/story/dilemma/issue. and as a rounds reporter, you really need to know your stuff, lest you end up sounding and looking like a dim wit.

 i survived. i walked out of the lion's den in one piece! nah. it wasn't that scary...in fact, they (the 4th RMIT Fashion Design students who were busy doing some final touch ups to their collection) were really helpful and nice. (i'm sure i won't get this lucky all the time).

i'm hoping to get last minute tickets to the show (really regret for not booking earlier now, they're all sold out!)
